Over 2200 entries from around the globe were received this year, of which just over 100 will be officially screened in competition is testimony to the fact that Flickerfest continues to attract the latest in innovative and creative shorts from the world’s most exciting new filmmakers for our Academy® accredited and BAFTA recognised shorts competition.
The successful films screening at Flickerfest are all united by their excellence within the short film genre, demonstrating short film’s role as the centrepiece of innovation and creativity in global cinema today.
This year the festival further extends its reach to 50 venues nationally, including, Esperance, Narrogin, Exmouth and Kununurra in WA; Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, Griffith and Port Macquarie in NSW, Maryborough, Gold Coast & Airlie Beach in QLD; and Launceston, Hobart and Cygnet in TAS, to name but a few, bringing audiences at an extensive network all across our continent an inspiring look at the world through short film.
As Australia’s leading Academy® accredited short film festival, films in competition at Flickerfest are fiercely competing for a number of prestigious prizes including The Flickerfest Award for Best International Short Film, the Yoram Gross Award For Best International Animation; the Virgin Australia Award for Best Australian Short Film and the Flickerfest Award For Best Short Documentary plus a host of other hotly contested prizes that recognize the various craft areas inherent in making a great short film.
In 2015, 20 different short film programmes will screen during the ten-day festival season. Apart from our 14 competitive programmes consisting of 5 International, 7 Australian and 2 Documentary in competition, Flickerfest also celebrate shorts with environmental themes in GreenFlicks competition, and productions from Primary and High School Students from across Australia in FlickerUp; which is sure to again showcase some extremely accomplished short films from our future cinema stars of tomorrow!
Apart from the competitive programmes, Flickerfest is also thrilled to present a tribute to the Oscars in our Oscar Favourites programme; a delightful family programme FlickerKids, short films for shorties; a hilarious programme of comedy shorts, Short Laughs; and a quirky romp through modern relationships in our Love Bites programme.
